Friday, July 31 : To our suprise it wasn't raining in the morning, but the dark clouds weren't very promising either... After a good breakfast we left Invergarry and headed westwards on the A87, along the Loch Duich to Dornie where we stopped and visited the Eilean Donan Castle. If you think you've seen this 12th century castle before, it might have been in the movies: it's the castle from the movie "Highlander".
We continued on A87 for a few miles to Auchertyre, where we turned right onto A890, a small road which ends in Stromeferry at the Loch Carron. There wasn't much to see in this small village, the burned out Hotel let us assume that it had seen better times. And the name is kinda misleading, there really is no ferry over the Loch, so we had to turn around ;-)
Just as we'd left Stromeferry again we reached Achmore, from were a single track road followed the shoreline of Loch Carron and via Duirinish and Erbusaig we met with A87 again, leading us to Kyle of Lochals and to the Skyebridge which took us over to the Isle of Skye. It wasn't very warm all day, but on Skye the temperatures were even lower than on the main land, a pretty strong wind was blowing and the rain had come back too. After riding in that ugly weather for hours, none of us felt like camping so we looked for a B&B place. We've been going up north on the eastern side of the island, and when we rode into Staffin, the nice little white house on the right, behind the white chappel caught our eye. It turned out that we'd picked probably one of the best B&B in the whole UK! Edna and Alfred were the friendliest hosts one can wish for, and imagine our suprise when Alfred welcomed us in 'hessisch', in german with an accent from the Frankfurt area, where he had emigrated from a couple of years ago :-) When we were sitting that evening in front of the fireplace, Alfred offered us some bottles of Edns'a tasty homebrew and later some shots of a very nice Higland Malt. No wonder we slept like rocks :-)
So if you ever come to the Isle of Skye, stop by at Edna and Alfred in Stuffin and tell'em we said Hi!!
